Because she had recently moved to Long Beach, she didn\u2019t know many people in the area and was pretty much on her own.<\/p>\n<p>When a friend of Nadia\u2019s visited from San Francisco, she was concerned to see Nadia looking so poorly. \u201cShe started calling around for help and discovered Catholic Charities,\u201d Nadia remembers. The two women went to Catholic Charities\u2019 Long Beach Community Services Center and were interviewed by Joan Dilig, Case Manager for San Pedro Region\u2019s Gatekeeper Project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom that point on, I didn\u2019t have to worry about food or human touch. People at Catholic Charities cared. They do so much good,\u201d Nadia explained. \u201cThey were there for me and still are. They touch my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243; show_divider=&#8221;on&#8221; color=&#8221;#ab862c&#8221; \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-566 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-John_250-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-John_250-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-John_250.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>John<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cJohn,\u201d 68 years old and disabled, shared a mobile home with his elderly parents in Pomona. When his parents went to an assisted living facility, John was without their income to pay for the rent and utilities.<\/p>\n<p>John went to the Catholic Charities\u2019 Pomona Community Services Center for assistance. The case worker contacted the mobile home park manager and was able to negotiate that John continue staying there. Catholic Charities helped John with one month of rental assistance.<\/p>\n<p>John then learned that Social Security had increased his income. He expressed his gratitude to Catholic Charities.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243; show_divider=&#8221;on&#8221; color=&#8221;#ab862c&#8221; \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-567 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-Leola_250-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-Leola_250-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-Leola_250.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Leola<\/h3>\n<p>A former Catholic Charities\u2019 client, \u201cLeola\u201d recalls that she was a registered nurse but<br \/>\nwent from being self-sufficient, having family and friends, to not being able to help herself.<\/p>\n<p>When Leola came to Catholic Charities\u2019 Project Achieve Emergency Shelter in Long Beach, \u201ceverything just got better from there.\u201d There was a mandatory meeting every two weeks with a case manager, \u201cbut I needed that, a sounding board,\u201d Leola shared. \u201cWhen I was there, I went to anything that was offered, such as life skills\u2019 classes and the housing program. The hardest was keeping my spirits up, but I had awesome case workers and everything just opened up. I got my housing approved and now I\u2019m in my own apartment. It\u2019s all good,\u201d Leona said with a big smile.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243; show_divider=&#8221;on&#8221; color=&#8221;#ab862c&#8221; \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-568 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-Jhonatan_250-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-Jhonatan_250-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-Jhonatan_250.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Jhonatan<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cJhonatan\u201d is a recent Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project\u2019s client who was born in El Salvador. When his parents immigrated to the United States, he was placed in removal proceedings. Jhonatan began to work with Esperanza attorney Evelyn Cedeno-Naik and, together, less than a year later, they won his case. \u201cWhen the judge said yes, and that she didn\u2019t have any problem with granting my case, it was incredible. The feeling was great,\u201d Jhonatan exclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>Since arriving in the U.S., Jhonatan has been attending school and applying to colleges. Columbia and UC Berkeley are his current top choices. \u201cI want to study something that has to do with math and technology. I was looking at computer science, but I want something that is a little more difficult,\u201d Jhonatan explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEsperanza is a good program. They\u2019ve helped me with everything and, during the entire process, they were good with me and my family,\u201d Jhonatan concluded.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243; show_divider=&#8221;on&#8221; color=&#8221;#ab862c&#8221; \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-569 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-The-Villa-Family_250-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-The-Villa-Family_250-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-The-Villa-Family_250.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>The &#8220;Villa&#8221; Family<\/h3>\n<p>Every week, hundreds of individuals and families walk through the doors of the food pantry located at Catholic Charities\u2019 Santa Barbara Community Services Center. These people come from various paths of life and backgrounds. However, they all rely on the supplemental food they receive from the food pantry.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cVilla\u201d family is one example of clients who receive this service. Because of the generosity of donors, this working mother is able to make sure that her children have nutritious food and that they do not go to bed hungry. With smiling faces, the small children accompany their mother to help her pick from fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, meat, and other staples, which ensure that they receive the proper nutrients that they need to be healthy.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243; show_divider=&#8221;on&#8221; color=&#8221;#ab862c&#8221; \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-570 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-Jessica_250-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-Jessica_250-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-Jessica_250.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Jessica<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cJessica\u201d entered Catholic Charities\u2019 Elizabeth Ann Seton Residence in Long Beach with her six-month old son after they became homeless. She expressed that this was her chance to start her life over to create a great future for herself and her son. She had been through a lot of turmoil and was determined to take the proper steps to ensure that her son would never have to experience such problems.<\/p>\n<p>At Elizabeth Ann Seton Residence, Jessica was referred to the Women\u2019s Re-Entry Program where she was able to receive group therapy and meet women who had gone through similar hardships.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stated, \u201cRight now, I am giving up the old me entirely, people, places, things.\u201d She continues to work weekly with her Catholic Charities\u2019 case manager to find housing and employment.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243; show_divider=&#8221;on&#8221; color=&#8221;#ab862c&#8221; \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-571 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/7-Ashley_250-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/7-Ashley_250-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/7-Ashley_250.jpg 659w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Ashley<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAshley\u201d, a former El Santo Ni\u00f1o Community Center\u2019s client, grew up in an area surrounded by gang and drug activities. When she was 11 years old, Ashley joined the El Santo Ni\u00f1o summer camp and, for several years, appreciated all the classes, especially arts and crafts. The positive experiences she had from the summer camp prompted her to become a year-round youth program participant.<\/p>\n<p>While at the center, Ashley received support from various programs, including tutoring and mentoring. She developed a strong sense of leadership, which then enabled her to become a good role model and support for other youth. Through Catholic Charities\u2019 Archdiocesan Youth Employment Services, she was able to join an internship program at the center.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Ashley is a freshman at California State University, Los Angeles. She is grateful for the staff of the summer camp and youth programs at El Santo Ni\u00f1o for guiding and inspiring her to follow her goal to obtain a college degree.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243; show_divider=&#8221;on&#8221; color=&#8221;#ab862c&#8221; \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.1.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-572 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/8-Maria_250-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/8-Maria_250-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/catholiccharitiesla.org\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/8-Maria_250.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Maria<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMaria\u201d is a single mother with two children, \u201cDaniela\u201d, age 17, and \u201cAndres\u201d, age 10. They experienced their first episode of homelessness in January, sleeping in their car for three days before entering Elizabeth Ann Seton Residence, Catholic Charities\u2019 family shelter in Long Beach.<\/p>\n<p>While in the shelter, the children\u2019s grades in school improved dramatically. Maria worked diligently with the shelter\u2019s case management team to find housing and locate other resources to help with her family\u2019s future success.
